  • Sedimentary Rock Formation: Identifying the Uninvolved Process
Sedimentary rocks are formed through a variety of processes, including:

    1. Erosion: Weathering and erosion break down existing rocks and produce sediments.

    2. Transportation: Sediments are transported by water, wind, or ice to a new location.

    3. Deposition: Sediments are deposited in layers when the energy of the transporting medium decreases.

    4. Compaction: The weight of overlying sediments compresses and compacts the deposited sediments.

    5. Cementation: Minerals dissolved in water precipitate and cement the sediments together.

The process that is not involved in the formation of sedimentary rocks is metamorphism. Metamorphism is a process that occurs when existing rocks are subjected to high temperatures and pressures, causing them to change their mineral composition and texture. Metamorphic rocks are formed through this process, not sedimentary rocks.
