  • Understanding Hot Spot Volcanoes: Chains, Trails, and Islands
Hot spots are usually found in the interiors of tectonic plates, lejos of boundaries. Volcanic activity of hot spot volcanoes form characteristic chains across the sea floor. These lines are called volcanic trails or volcanic chains. Individual volcanoes on the chain are called seamounts. If a seamount rises above sea level, it is called an oceanic island or volcanic island.
