* Black soil: This type of soil is found in the western and southern part of the Chotanagpur Plateau. It is black in colour and is very fertile. It is derived from the weathering of Deccan Basalt.

* Red soil: This type of soil is found in the northern and eastern part of the Chotanagpur Plateau. It is red in colour and is less fertile than black soil. It is derived from the weathering of granite and gneiss rocks.
