Sandstone is a clastic sedimentary rock composed of sand-sized (> 0.0625 mm) mineral or rock grains or rock fragments. Sand-sized grains are deposited by various mechanisms, including the transportation of sand-sized sediments by wind or water. Most sandstone are composed of quartz and/or feldspar because these are the most common minerals in the Earth's crust. Other common components of sandstone include rock fragments such as lithic fragments, clay minerals, oxides and hydroxides of aluminium and iron, and carbonate minerals such as calcite and dolomite.
