  • Understanding Clastic Sedimentary Rocks: Formation & Types
Lithified detritus forms clastic sedimentary rocks. Clastic sedimentary rocks are formed from the accumulation and cementation of sediments derived from the weathering and erosion of pre-existing rocks. These sediments can range in size from clay-sized particles to large boulders, and can be transported and deposited by a variety of processes, including water, wind, and ice. When these sediments are buried and subjected to pressure and heat over time, they become lithified, or turned into rock, forming clastic sedimentary rocks. Examples of clastic sedimentary rocks include sandstone, conglomerate, and breccia.
