  • Mesosphere: Earth's Coldest Atmospheric Layer - Definition & Details
The third layer of the Earth is the mesosphere. It is located between the stratosphere and the thermosphere, and extends from about 50 to 85 kilometers (31 to 53 miles) above the surface of the Earth. The mesosphere is characterized by decreasing temperature with increasing altitude, and is the coldest region of the Earth's atmosphere.
