When a person comes into contact with C. tetani spores, they can enter the body through a wound. Once inside the body, the spores can germinate and grow into vegetative cells. These cells produce a toxin called tetanospasmin, which affects the nervous system and causes tetanus.
Tetanus is a serious disease that can be fatal. Symptoms of tetanus include muscle stiffness, spasms, and difficulty breathing. Treatment for tetanus includes antibiotics, antitoxin, and supportive care.
