    Water passes through the following sequence of structures as it enters a root:

    1. Root hairs: These are tiny, finger-like projections that extend from the surface of root cells. They increase the surface area of the root, which allows more water to be absorbed.

    2. Cortex: The cortex is the region of the root that liegt between the epidermis and the vascular cylinder. It contains thin-walled parenchyma cells that store water and nutrients.

    3. Endodermis: The endodermis is a single layer of cells that surrounds the vascular cylinder. They control the movement of water and nutrients into the root.

    4. Casparian strip: The Casparian strip is a waxy layer that lines the inner surface of the endodermal cells. It prevents water and nutrients from leaking out of the root.

    5. Pericycle: The pericycle is a thin layer of cells that liegt between the endodermis and the vascular cylinder. It produces new root branches.

    6. Xylem vessels: The xylem vessels are long, hollow tubes that transport water and nutrients up the stem of the plant.
