  • Gold vs. Pyrite: How Prospectors Used Density to Separate Them
Prospectors use a method called panning that utilizes the difference in density between gold and pyrite. When combined, the denser gold sinks to the bottom of the pan, while the lighter pyrite stays at the top. In addition, gold has a distinct yellowish color, while pyrite is a brassy color, making it easier to distinguish between the two minerals.
