  • Cave Dissolution: Where Does Material Go?
The dissolved materials in caves are transported by groundwater flow and eventually discharge to the surface through springs, rivers, or other water bodies. Some of the dissolved materials may be removed from the groundwater system by precipitation or adsorption onto the surfaces of minerals in the cave walls. Over time, the dissolved materials can accumulate and form speleothems, such as stalactites and stalagmites, which are secondary mineral deposits that are found in caves.
