    Why is Taiwan so exposed to earthquakes?

    Taiwan is located at the boundary of the Eurasian Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate. The Eurasian Plate is moving westward, while the Philippine Sea Plate is moving eastward. This collision has created the Taiwan mountain range and also makes Taiwan an earthquake-prone area.

    How is Taiwan well prepared to withstand earthquakes?

    * Strict building codes. Taiwan has some of the strictest building codes in the world. These codes require buildings to be designed to withstand earthquakes of a certain magnitude.

    * Public education. The Taiwanese government provides public education about earthquakes, including how to prepare for them and how to stay safe during an earthquake.

    * Emergency response. Taiwan has a well-developed emergency response system for dealing with earthquakes. This system includes emergency shelters, medical care, and transportation.

    Taiwan's preparedness for earthquakes has helped to save lives and reduce damage during past earthquakes. In the 1999 Taiwan earthquake, for example, there were over 2,400 deaths, but the death toll could have been much higher if Taiwan had not been so well prepared.
