Much of the plastic rubbish in the Indian Ocean has accumulated in the Great Indian Garbage Patch, a large area of marine debris located between Africa and Australia. The patch is estimated to be about the size of Texas and contains millions of tons of plastic waste. The plastic waste in the patch comes from a variety of sources, including land-based littering, shipping accidents, and illegal dumping. The plastic waste can cause a number of problems for marine life, including entanglement, ingestion, and habitat destruction.
