  • Remora Fish Hitchhiking: How They Sense and Secure a Ride
    A new study, published in the journal "Biology Letters," has shed light on how remora fishes have a remarkable ability to know when to hitch a ride aboard their hosts, such as sharks, rays, or even sea turtles. This behavior is crucial for remoras to obtain food, protection, and transportation in the vast ocean.

    The study, led by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, focused on the remora species known as the Pacific remora (Remora remora) and the spotted remora (Remora osteochir). They observed these fishes' interactions with their hosts in the waters off Central California and Mexico.

    Researchers noticed that remoras have several cues that allow them to identify potential hosts. One cue is the presence of a "cleaning station." Remoras often congregate near cleaning stations, where various fishes gather to have parasites and debris removed from their bodies. These stations are often frequented by large marine species like sharks and rays, providing remoras with opportunities to hitch a ride.

    Another cue is the size and shape of the host. Remoras prefer to attach to large, streamlined animals with smooth skin, such as sharks and manta rays. These hosts provide a stable and hydrodynamic surface for remoras to adhere to, minimizing resistance in the water.

    The study also found that remoras use their sensory organs, such as their lateral line system, to detect water currents and vibrations generated by their hosts. When a potential host approaches, remoras become alert and position themselves to quickly attach using their specialized suction disk, located on top of their head.

    Dr. Tierney Thys, the lead author of the study, explained, "Remoras have evolved a suite of adaptations that allow them to successfully exploit their hosts. By being able to identify and attach to suitable hosts, remoras gain access to various benefits without having to expend much energy swimming or foraging."

    The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the ecological interactions between remora fishes and their hosts, contributing to our understanding of the diverse survival strategies employed by marine species.
