  • Understanding Steam Shovels: How They Work & Historical Significance
    Steam shovels are excavation machines that use a steam engine or motor to power a bucket or shovel that digs into the ground. They were widely used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in the construction of railroads and canals, but have since been largely replaced by diesel- and hydraulic-powered excavators.

    Steam shovels played a major role in the development of the United States and other industrialized countries. They were used to dig the Panama Canal, the Suez Canal, and many other large excavation projects. They were also widely used in the construction of railroads, roads, and other infrastructure projects.

    Although steam shovels have been largely replaced by diesel- and hydraulic-powered excavators, they remain an important part of construction history. They are still used in some countries, and they are also popular as collectors' items.
