  • Volcano Eruptions: Speed and the Impossibility of Outrunning Lava
    The short answer is: No.

Volcanoes can erupt with incredible force and speed. The fastest lava flows can reach speeds of up to 70 kilometres per hour (43 miles per hour), and pyroclastic flows can travel at speeds of up to 700 kilometres per hour (435 miles per hour). Even if you were a world-class sprinter, you would not be able to outrun a volcanic eruption.

In addition to the speed of volcanic eruptions, there is also the issue of heat. Lava can reach temperatures of up to 1,200 degrees Celsius (2,200 degrees Fahrenheit), and pyroclastic flows can reach temperatures of up to 1,000 degrees Celsius (1,800 degrees Fahrenheit). Even if you could outrun the eruption, you would likely be killed by the heat.

If you are ever caught in a volcanic eruption, the best thing to do is to stay calm and follow the instructions of local authorities. Evacuate the area immediately and seek shelter in a safe location. Do not try to outrun the eruption.
