  • Volcanic Sulfur Emissions: Ice Core Data Reveals Significant Background Release
Volcanic eruptions, whether explosive or effusive, emit large quantities of sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere. Volcanic eruptions are not needed for degassing of sulfur into the atmosphere. Ice-core records show that background (noneruptive) volcanic degassing of sulfur can emit just as much sulfur into the stratosphere as eruptions and that it can have a significant effect on climate.
