  • Rediscovering the Bendigo Gambusia: A Lost Fish Species Returns
In 1864 a young man named Walter Powell published an article in the Zoologist magazine describing a new find made in an isolated stream near Bendigo Creek in Victoria,Australia. In it he described a rare and mysterious fish known today as the Bendigo gambusia.

However, this description was never accompanied by a physical sample and the fish seemingly disappeared for more than 100 years. Then,in 2019 a team of scientists from the University of Melbourne decided to set out to search for the long lost fish.

After extensive fieldwork, the team finally found a series of pools at the original location described by Powell.Much to their surprise, the Bendigo gambusia was in fact alive and well, living in these hidden waters.

The team carefully documented the fish and even collected a few specimens to help study its biology and habitat. The finding was seen as a major conservation victory,as the Bendigo gambusia was once thought to be extinct.
