  • Lipids: The Energy Storage Compounds in Organic Chemistry
The class of organic compounds that stores energy as fat is lipids.

    Here's why:

    * Lipids are a diverse group of organic compounds that are characterized by their insolubility in water. They include fats, oils, waxes, and steroids.

    * Fats are specifically triglycerides, which are composed of a glycerol molecule attached to three fatty acid chains.

    * Fatty acids are long chains of hydrocarbons that can be saturated (with single bonds) or unsaturated (with double or triple bonds).

    * The carbon-hydrogen bonds in fatty acids store a large amount of energy, making lipids an efficient way for organisms to store energy.

While carbohydrates are the primary source of energy for most organisms, lipids can be used as a long-term energy source when carbohydrate stores are depleted.
