    The transfer of electrons along a series of proteins releasing energy as they pass is known as electron transport chain.

    This process is a fundamental part of cellular respiration and photosynthesis, where energy from the movement of electrons is used to generate a proton gradient, which in turn is used to produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the cell's primary energy currency.
