  • Kinetic Energy and Velocity: Understanding the Relationship
    Kinetic energy is directly proportional to the square of velocity. This means:

    * If you double the velocity, the kinetic energy increases by a factor of four.

    * If you triple the velocity, the kinetic energy increases by a factor of nine.

    Let's look at an example:

    * Double the velocity (20 m/s): (1/2) * 1000 kg * (20 m/s)² = 200,000 Joules (four times the initial KE)

    * Triple the velocity (30 m/s): (1/2) * 1000 kg * (30 m/s)² = 450,000 Joules (nine times the initial KE)

    In summary: A small change in velocity can lead to a significant change in kinetic energy because of the squared relationship. This is why speeding up even slightly can have a major impact on the energy involved in a collision.
