Magnetic materials are a staple of modern science and engineering. While many people know how magnets attract each other, fewer realize how to safely modify a magnet for custom applications. Drilling a magnet is straightforward when you follow proper safety and handling procedures.
Wear safety goggles or eye protection at all times.
Secure the magnet in a bench vise, leaving roughly one inch of the magnet exposed. Choose a magnet that is about one inch in diameter or one inch square to keep the work area manageable.
Attach a 3/16‑inch drill bit to your handheld drill.
Position the drill bit at the center of the exposed magnet and start the drill at a moderate speed.
Gradually feed the bit through the magnet until a clean hole is formed. Keep the drill steady and avoid excessive torque.
Never operate a drill without eye protection. Ensure the magnet is firmly clamped and the drill bit is sharp to prevent metal shavings and accidental contact with the drill.
