  • Clean Iron Filings from a Bar Magnet – A Step‑by‑Step Guide

    By Susan McGrath
    Updated Mar 24, 2022

Iron filings are a classic way to visualize magnetic fields, but they can leave a stubborn residue on a bar magnet. The following method will help you remove filings cleanly and efficiently.

Step 1 – Grab the Bulk Filings

Use your fingers to pinch off as many filings as possible. This removes the bulk of the residue and makes the remaining filings easier to tackle.

    Step 2 – Apply a Sticky Medium

Press a piece of wax, adhesive tape, or another sticky surface onto the magnet’s face. The filings will adhere to the sticky material.

Step 3 – Lift the Sticky Layer

Gently lift the sticky surface away from the magnet, taking the filings with it.

Step 4 – Repeat Until Clean

Continue the process with fresh sections of the sticky material until all filings are removed. A clean magnet is now ready for your next demonstration.

    Safety Note

If you use warm wax, allow it to cool slightly before handling to avoid burns.
