In any electrical system, power (in watts) is the product of voltage (volts) and current (amps):
P = V × I. While watts give an overall energy measure, they don’t reveal the underlying voltage or current values. However, you can reverse the calculation to find the amperage if you know the power in megawatts and the system voltage.
Multiply the megawatt value by 1,000,000. This brings the measurement into standard watts, the unit used in the power equation.
Take the watt value from Step 1 and divide it by the voltage at which the system operates (in volts). The result is the current in amperes.
Because the voltage units cancel out, the final figure is purely amperage. If needed, divide by 1,000 to express the current in kiloamps (kA) or by 1,000,000 for megaamps (MA).
This method provides a straightforward way to determine the current required for a given megawatt load, essential for designing and troubleshooting power systems.
