When the heat climbs, a small fan can transform a long day at the desk or on the porch into a comfortable, productive experience—especially if you’re short on batteries or a built‑in unit. Because the core of a fan is simply a motor and a set of blades, building your own is surprisingly straightforward.
Cut your chosen material into a symmetrical fan blade pattern. For a cardboard fan, draw a fan shape and cut out eight identical blades. If you’re using a CD, see the “CD Fan Blades” section for a quick method. Make a small hole in the center to fit the motor’s armature.
Construct a simple tripod or flat base from wood or a bent coat‑hanger. The stand should hold the motor securely and allow you to position the blades at eye level.
Glue or tape the blades to the motor’s armature. Ensure they are evenly spaced and balanced to avoid wobble.
Strip the ends of the wire and connect one to the motor’s positive terminal, the other to the negative. Twist the exposed ends back onto themselves and secure with electrical tape.
For battery power, tape the positive end of the wire to the battery’s positive terminal and the negative to the negative terminal. For USB, cut the cable to expose the red (positive) and black (negative) wires, then connect accordingly. If you added a switch, wire it between the power source and the motor.
Cut eight thin slits along the shiny side of an old CD, leaving the clear center ring intact.
Hold the CD over a candle flame to soften the plastic. Gently bend each blade to a ~30° angle. Avoid overheating; a few short passes are enough.
Using a needle or drill bit matching the motor’s armature, punch a hole in the CD’s center.
Insert a cork or small rod through the hole, glue it in place, and then mount the motor onto the cork. Your CD fan is ready to spin.
Never operate the fan with exposed wires or when the power source is connected. Remove batteries or disconnect the USB cable before making modifications.
Build a mini fan in minutes using simple materials—add a switch for convenience, keep safety in mind, and enjoy a cool breeze on the go.
