  • Silverware Composition: What's it Made Of? - Silver vs. Stainless Steel
The element most commonly used to make silverware is silver (Ag).

However, most "silverware" you encounter in everyday life is actually stainless steel, which is an alloy of iron (Fe) and chromium (Cr), sometimes with nickel (Ni) and other metals.

While true silver is beautiful and durable, it's also quite expensive. Therefore, stainless steel is a more practical and affordable alternative for everyday use.
