  • Internal Modem: What It Is and How It Works
A modem that is contained within the system unit is called an internal modem.

    Here's why:

    * Internal: Means it's physically located inside the computer's main case, usually on an expansion card.

    * Modem: Stands for "modulator-demodulator", a device that converts digital data from your computer into analog signals for transmission over phone lines, and vice versa.

Internal modems were very common in the past, but with the rise of broadband internet (cable, DSL, fiber), they have become less prevalent. However, some older computers still use them.
