  • Understanding Brown Wires: Voltage & Electrical Systems
You can't determine the voltage based on wire color alone. Here's why:

    * Wire color is not a universal standard for voltage. While brown is often used for hot wires, it can vary depending on the wiring system and region.

    * Voltage depends on the electrical circuit. A brown wire could be carrying 120 volts, 240 volts, or even lower voltages in certain applications.

To determine the voltage of a brown wire, you need to:

    1. Consult the electrical diagram: This will show you the voltage of the circuit the wire is a part of.

    2. Check the electrical panel: The panel will have labels indicating the voltage of each circuit breaker.

    3. Use a voltage tester: A non-contact voltage tester can safely detect the presence of voltage on a wire without making contact.

Important safety note: Always de-energize circuits before working on them. Never assume a wire is safe to touch based on its color.
