    Appliances like electric irons are provided with wooden or plastic handles for safety reasons:

    * Insulation: Wood and plastic are excellent insulators. This means they do not conduct electricity well. When you use an electric iron, the heating element inside gets very hot. Having a wooden or plastic handle prevents the heat from transferring to your hand, ensuring you don't get burned.

    * Heat resistance: Both wood and plastic can withstand the heat generated by the iron's heating element without melting or becoming brittle. This makes them suitable for holding the iron even when it's hot.

    Metal handles, on the other hand, would be dangerous for the following reasons:

    * Conductivity: Metal conducts heat very well. If the iron's handle were made of metal, the heat from the heating element would transfer quickly to your hand, leading to severe burns.

    * Shock hazard: Metal can conduct electricity. If the iron's wiring is faulty, a metal handle could become live, posing a serious electrical shock hazard.
