  • Build a DIY Spectroscope: A Step-by-Step Guide
    Materials:

    - A cardboard box

    - A CD or DVD

    - A rubber band

    - A piece of black paper

    - A pencil

    - A sharp knife

    - Scissors

    Instructions:

    1. Cut the bottom off of the cardboard box.

    2. Remove the label from the CD or DVD.

    3. Cut a slit in the center of the black paper large enough to fit the CD or DVD.

    4. Tape the black paper to the inside of the cardboard box, covering the hole.

    5. Make a small hole in the top of the cardboard box, directly above the black paper.

    6. Insert the CD or DVD into the slit in the black paper so that the shiny side is facing up.

    7. Secure the CD or DVD in place with the rubber band.

    8. Point the spectroscope towards a light source and look through the hole at the top of the box.

    How to use your spectroscope:

    - Hold your spectroscope up to your eye and point it at a light source, such as the sun or a light bulb.

    - You should see a rainbow of colors, which is the light being separated into its component wavelengths.

    - The different wavelengths of light are refracted (bent) at different angles as they pass through the CD or DVD, causing them to spread out into a spectrum.

    - The colors of the rainbow correspond to the different wavelengths of light, with red light having the longest wavelength and violet light having the shortest wavelength.
