  • Sound Wave Transmission: Medium Required or Not?
Sound waves can travel with or without a medium. In a medium, such as air or water, sound waves travel as mechanical waves, causing the particles of the medium to vibrate. In a vacuum, however, sound waves cannot travel, as there are no particles to vibrate. Instead, sound waves in a vacuum travel as electromagnetic waves, similar to light waves.
