  • Graphite vs. Lead: What's Inside a Pencil?
The core of a pencil does not contain lead. Pencils contain a form of solid carbon known as graphite. Graphite is a naturally occurring mineral that is composed primarily of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice. It is the softest mineral on the Mohs scale of hardness, and it has a slippery feel. These properties make it ideal for use in pencils, as it can easily be rubbed off onto paper.
