  • Silicon: Metalloid Properties & Why It's Not a Nonmetal
Silicon is not like a non-metal, in fact, it is a metalloid. Metalloids, also called semi-metals, have properties that are intermediate between those of metals and non-metals. They generally exhibit some of the characteristics of metals and some of the characteristics of nonmetals. While silicon possesses some characteristics common to nonmetals, there are more metal-like characteristics to silicon than nonmetal-like characteristics.
