  • Silicon Sources: Where Does It Come From?
Silicon, the second most abundant element on Earth's crust, is not obtained in an elemental form in the Earth's environment.

Silicon is obtained commercially through the industrial refining and processing of various silicon-containing minerals, such as silica, clays, and sands.

The primary source of silicon is quartz (silicon dioxide), a mineral that is abundant in the Earth's crust and is found in various forms such as rocks and sands. Silicon dioxide is then reduced to produce pure silicon.
