  • Reconnect as a Family: Strategies for Device-Free Time & Connection
    1. Establish device free time. Designate specific times during the day or week when all devices are turned off or put away, This could include meals, family game night or outdoor play.

    2. Create alternative activities. Encourage family members to engage in activities that do not involve technology. Ideas could include board games, puzzles, sports or hobbies like art or music.

    3. Be an active listener. Make an effort to listen attentively when family members are speaking, without distractions from phones or devices. This shows respect and encourages open communication.

    4. Have regular family meetings. Schedule time to discuss family matters , challenges and goals. Use this opportunity to connect on a deeper level, without distractions.

    5. Plan tech-free outings. Organize activities outside the home that don't involve screens. Go on walks, bike rides, visit parks or museums, or engage in a shared hobby together.

    6. Set a good example. Parents should be mindful of their own tech usage and model the behaviour they want to see in their children. Limiting screen time and actively engaging with family members shows the importance of real connections.

    7. Be patient and understanding. Making changes to technology habits takes time. Encourage family members to gradually reduce screen time and gradually increase device free interactions.

    8. Seek support. If finding it difficult to manage screen time within the family, consider seeking professional help. A therapist or counsellor can provide strategies and techniques for healthy tech use and improving communication.

Remember, the goal is not to eliminate technology completely, but to find a balanced approach that allows for both digital engagement and meaningful human connection.
