  • Drones at CES: Surging Interest in Commercial and Military Applications
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Drones are swooping into the gadget-lovers paradise of the annual CES electronics show in Las Vegas this week, reflecting surging interest in the technology that has moved beyond hobbyists to become integral parts of everything from commercial deliveries to military warfare.

The small vehicles are now seen as must-haves for companies that are trying to tap the potential of the sky for faster package deliveries, infrastructure inspections, security and surveillance.

China’s DJI is still the dominant player in consumer drones, but there is a new wave of startups like Skydio and Autel Robotics that are aiming to shake things up and win a share of the rapidly expanding consumer market.

“The consumer drone market is just starting to hit its stride. We are still in the very early innings of growth,” said Colin Guinn, CEO of research and consulting firm DRONEII.

There are about 2 million consumer drones in the U.S., according to the Consumer Technology Association, which puts on the CES show. Those numbers are expected to grow rapidly as a new generation of camera-carrying drones becomes more affordable and easier to fly. Prices start around $200. Some of the high-end models used by professionals can run into the thousands.

Here’s a look at some of the top drones on display at CES 2023:

DJI Avata: DJI’s latest consumer drone is a first-person view (FPV) drone that is designed for racing and acrobatics. It is small and agile, and can reach speeds of up to 62 miles per hour. It also has a 4K camera that can shoot stabilized video.

Autel Robotics EVO Nano+: The EVO Nano+ is a compact and portable drone that is designed for everyday use. It has a 4K camera, a three-axis gimbal, and can fly for up to 28 minutes on a single charge.

Skydio 2+: The Skydio 2+ is a powerful and versatile drone that is designed for professionals and enthusiasts. It has a 6K camera, a 1-inch sensor, and can fly for up to 35 minutes on a single charge.

Parrot Anafi AI: The Anafi AI is a compact and lightweight drone that is designed for inspection and mapping tasks. It has a 4K camera, a thermal imaging camera, and a variety of sensors that can collect data for analysis.

WingtraOne PPK: The WingtraOne PPK is a rugged and durable drone that is designed for surveying and mapping tasks. It has a 4K camera, a high-resolution mapping camera, and a variety of sensors that can collect data for analysis.
