  • US Election Cybersecurity Risks: Assessing Vulnerabilities & Threats
According to a 2018 report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), the US election cyber infrastructure is at high risk of hacking.

The CSIS report found that many of the systems used to conduct elections in the United States are outdated and vulnerable to hacking. For example, many states still use paper ballots that are counted by hand, which makes them susceptible to fraud and tampering. Additionally, many of the electronic voting machines used in the US are also outdated and vulnerable to hacking.

The CSIS report also found that foreign adversaries, such as Russia, are actively targeting US election infrastructure. For example, in 2016, Russian hackers targeted state election systems in an attempt to influence the US presidential election.

The CSIS report concluded that the US election cyber infrastructure is at high risk of hacking and that it is imperative for the US government to take steps to improve its cybersecurity.

Since then, the US government has taken some steps to improve the security of its election infrastructure. For example, in 2018, Congress passed the Secure Elections Act, which provides $380 million in funding to help states improve their election security. Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security has been working with states to improve their cybersecurity and has provided guidance on how to protect elections from hacking.

Despite these efforts, the US election cyber infrastructure remains at risk of hacking. In 2020, for example, Russian hackers were again targeting state election systems in an attempt to influence the US presidential election.

It is important for the US government to continue to take steps to improve the security of its election infrastructure. This includes providing more funding for cybersecurity, working with states to improve their cybersecurity, and developing new technologies to protect elections from hacking.

By taking these steps, the US government can help to ensure that the integrity of its elections is protected.
