  • IAA 2019: Automotive Industry's Reinvention - EVs, Autonomous Driving & Connectivity
IAA Car Show Displays Industry In Throes Of Reinvention

The 2019 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, Germany, offered a glimpse into the future of the automotive industry, with a strong focus on electric vehicles, autonomous driving, and connectivity.

    Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles (EVs) were a major focus of the IAA, with many automakers showcasing their latest EV models. Volkswagen unveiled its ID.3, an affordable electric hatchback that is set to go on sale in Europe in 2020. BMW showed off its iX3, an electric SUV that is due for release in 2021. Mercedes-Benz revealed its EQC, an electric crossover that is already on sale in Europe.

    Autonomous Driving

Autonomous driving was another key theme of the IAA. Several automakers showcased their latest self-driving car technologies, including Audi, BMW, and Daimler. Audi demonstrated its A8 sedan, which is capable of Level 3 autonomous driving, meaning it can drive itself without human intervention on most roads. BMW showed off its iNEXT concept car, which is designed for Level 4 autonomous driving, meaning it can drive itself in all but the most complex driving situations. Daimler unveiled its Vision EQXX concept car, which is capable of Level 5 autonomous driving, meaning it can drive itself without human intervention in any situation.

    Connectivity

Connectivity was also a major focus of the IAA, with many automakers showcasing their latest connected car technologies. Volkswagen showed off its Car-Net platform, which allows drivers to connect their cars to the internet and access a variety of services, such as real-time traffic information, weather updates, and remote access to the vehicle's climate control system. BMW demonstrated its ConnectedDrive platform, which offers similar features to Car-Net, as well as the ability to use the car as a mobile hotspot. Mercedes-Benz revealed its Mercedes me connect platform, which provides a wide range of connected services, including navigation, concierge services, and remote vehicle diagnostics.

The Future Of The Automotive Industry

The IAA car show demonstrated that the automotive industry is undergoing a period of rapid reinvention, with a strong focus on electric vehicles, autonomous driving, and connectivity. These technologies are expected to have a major impact on the way we drive in the future, making cars safer, more efficient, and more enjoyable to use.
