Before entering the secured area of the airport, passengers must pass through a security checkpoint. Here, they will be screened for weapons, explosives, and other dangerous items.
The main components of passenger screening are:
* Metal detectors: Passengers walk through a metal detector, which will sound an alarm if metal is detected.
* X-ray machines: Passengers' carry-on baggage is scanned by an X-ray machine, which produces an image of the contents of the bag.
* Pat-downs: If the metal detector or X-ray machine detects something suspicious, passengers may be subject to a pat-down by a security officer.
Checked Baggage Screening
Checked baggage is also screened for dangerous items, but the process is different from passenger screening. Checked baggage is screened using a variety of methods, including:
* X-ray machines: Checked baggage is scanned by an X-ray machine, which produces an image of the contents of the bag.
* Explosive trace detection (ETD) machines: ETD machines are used to detect trace amounts of explosives on the surface of objects.
* Canine teams: Dogs are trained to sniff out explosives and other dangerous materials.
Prohibited Items
There are a number of items that are prohibited from being carried onto an airplane or in checked baggage. Some of the most common prohibited items include:
* Weapons: Firearms, ammunition, knives, and other weapons are not allowed on airplanes.
* Explosives: Explosives, detonators, and other incendiary devices are not allowed on airplanes.
* Flammable liquids: Gasoline, lighter fluid, and other flammable liquids are not allowed on airplanes.
* Poisons: Poisonous substances, such as arsenic and cyanide, are not allowed on airplanes.
* Other dangerous items: Other items that are deemed to be dangerous or could be used to cause harm are not allowed on airplanes.
