  • Digital Preparedness: Staying Connected During Natural Disasters
    Before the Disaster

    1. Have a plan in place. Make a list of emergency contacts and important phone numbers, including the non-emergency number for your local police or fire department. Keep this list in a safe and accessible location.

    2. Back up your data. Regularly back up your computer data, including photos, videos, and important documents, to a cloud storage service or an external hard drive. This will help ensure that you don't lose any of your valuable data in the event of a disaster.

    3. Keep your devices charged. Make sure all of your electronic devices, including your phone, laptop, and tablet, are fully charged before a natural disaster strikes.

    4. Download offline maps. Download offline maps of your area so you can still access them if you lose internet connectivity.

    5. Install a flashlight app. Install a flashlight app on your phone so you can have a light source even if the power goes out.

    During the Disaster

    1. Stay informed. Listen to local radio or television stations for updates on the disaster and instructions from emergency officials.

    2. Use social media. Social media can be a helpful way to stay connected with friends and family during a disaster. However, be aware that rumors and misinformation can also spread quickly on social media, so be sure to only trust official sources.

    3. Use text messaging. Text messaging is often more reliable than phone calls during a disaster. If you can't get through to someone by phone, try sending them a text message.

    4. Use public Wi-Fi hotspots. If you lose internet connectivity at home, you may be able to find public Wi-Fi hotspots at libraries, coffee shops, or other public places.

    5. Conserve your battery. Turn off any unnecessary features on your electronic devices to conserve battery power.

    After the Disaster

    1. Check for damage. Once it is safe to do so, check your home and belongings for damage.

    2. Reconnect your devices. Once the power is restored, reconnect your electronic devices to the internet.

    3. Update your contact information. If your contact information has changed due to the disaster, be sure to update it with your emergency contacts and important organizations.

    4. Back up your data again. Once you have reconnected your devices to the internet, back up your data again to a cloud storage service or an external hard drive. This will help ensure that you don't lose any of your valuable data in the event of a subsequent disaster.

    5. Stay connected. Stay connected with your friends and family, and let them know how you are doing.
