    Propane is a versatile energy source that can be stored as a liquid when combined with butane, forming liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). First identified in 1910 and patented in 1913, propane entered mass production by the 1920s, powering millions of U.S. homes. Today, it remains a staple for central heating, grilling, engines, and portable stoves.

    Supply Dynamics

    As a by‑product of petroleum refining and natural gas processing, propane’s availability is closely tied to the global oil market. While generally plentiful, its production can be constrained during periods of low petroleum output, limiting its reliability as a standalone fuel source.

    Propane delivers high energy content at a competitive price. Appliances designed for propane often offer a shorter payback period than alternatives, thanks to the fuel’s efficient combustion and low operating costs. This makes it an attractive option for both residential and commercial applications.

    Safety Considerations

    Propane is safe when handled correctly, but its combustibility demands vigilance. The gas is heavier than air, so leaks can accumulate near the floor in enclosed spaces, increasing fire risk. High‑pressure storage requires robust containers; sudden ruptures can release gas violently.

    Environmental Impact

    Compared to many fossil fuels, propane is environmentally friendly. It meets EPA clean‑air standards, emits lower levels of harmful pollutants, and is non‑toxic and water‑soluble. As a gas, it cannot spill into the environment, reducing the risk of contamination.
