A cube is a perfectly symmetrical three-dimensional shape: it has six square faces, eight vertices, and twelve edges that all measure the same length. Whether you’re tackling a geometry assignment or working in a field that relies on precise measurements, knowing how to compute the surface area of a cube is essential. The surface area is simply the combined area of all six faces.
Use a ruler to determine the length of one edge of the cube. The same measurement will apply to every edge.
Multiply the edge length by itself (edge × edge). For example, if an edge is 2 inches long, 2 × 2 = 4, so one face covers 4 square inches.
Since a cube has six faces, multiply the result from step 2 by six. In the example above, 4 × 6 = 24 square inches is the total surface area.
