  • Solvent vs. Solute: Understanding Dissolving & Solutions
The substance dissolved to form a solute is called the solvent.

    Here's how it works:

    * Solute: The substance that gets dissolved.

    * Solvent: The substance that does the dissolving.

    * Solution: The homogeneous mixture formed when the solute dissolves in the solvent.

    For example:

    * When you add sugar (solute) to water (solvent), the sugar dissolves and you get a sugar solution.

    * When you add salt (solute) to water (solvent), the salt dissolves and you get a salt solution.

The solvent is usually present in a larger amount than the solute.
