  • Bases and Hydrogen Ions: Understanding Acid-Base Reactions
    Bases accept hydrogen ions (H+).

    Here's why:

    * Acids release hydrogen ions (H+) into solution, making the solution more acidic.

    * Bases react with hydrogen ions (H+) in solution, removing them and making the solution less acidic (more basic or alkaline).

    This is why bases are also called proton acceptors.
