  • Valence Electrons After Electron Gain: Halogens Explained
Halogens are in group 17 of the periodic table. They have 7 valence electrons.

When a halogen atom gains one electron, it becomes a negatively charged ion (an anion). This added electron fills its outermost shell, giving it a total of 8 valence electrons, achieving a stable electron configuration similar to the noble gases.
