  • Binary Compounds: Understanding the '-ide' Ending & Exceptions
    Names of binary compounds (compounds made of two elements) end with "-ide".

    Here are some examples:

    * Sodium chloride (NaCl)

    * Magnesium oxide (MgO)

    * Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S)

    * Calcium bromide (CaBr₂)

    However, there are a few exceptions:

    * Water (H₂O)

    * Ammonia (NH₃)

    It's important to note that this rule applies specifically to binary compounds, not to all compounds. For example, compounds with more than two elements, such as sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO₃), do not end in "-ide".
