  • What is a Polysaccharide? Definition & Examples
A carbohydrate made of hundreds of molecules linked together is called a polysaccharide.

    Here's why:

    * Carbohydrates are organic compounds made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.

    * Monosaccharides are the simplest carbohydrates, like glucose and fructose.

    * Disaccharides are formed when two monosaccharides bond together, like sucrose (table sugar).

    * Polysaccharides are complex carbohydrates formed by the bonding of many (hundreds or even thousands) monosaccharides.

Some common examples of polysaccharides include:

    * Starch: A storage form of glucose in plants.

    * Glycogen: A storage form of glucose in animals.

    * Cellulose: A structural component of plant cell walls.

    * Chitin: A structural component of the exoskeletons of insects and crustaceans.
