Hemoglobin is a protein found in red blood cells that is responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body. At the center of each hemoglobin molecule is a heme group, which contains an iron atom. This iron atom is what binds to oxygen molecules, allowing hemoglobin to carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.
