  • Atoms: The Fundamental Building Blocks of Matter and Chemical Properties
    The smallest unit that retains unique chemical properties of a specific type of matter is an atom.

    Here's why:

    * Atoms are the building blocks of everything: All matter is made up of atoms, which are the smallest units of an element.

    * Unique Properties: Each element has a specific number of protons in its nucleus. This number, called the atomic number, determines the element's identity and its unique chemical properties.

    * Chemical Reactions: Chemical reactions occur when atoms interact and share or exchange electrons. These interactions are dictated by the atomic structure and properties of the atoms involved.

    Examples:

    * A single oxygen atom (O) has the chemical properties of oxygen, such as its ability to react with other elements to form compounds like water (H₂O).

    * A single carbon atom (C) has the chemical properties of carbon, including its ability to form long chains and complex structures, which are essential for life.

    While smaller particles exist within atoms (protons, neutrons, electrons), these particles don't possess the unique chemical properties of the element itself.
