  • Sodium Ionization: Atomic Number Remains Constant - A Chemistry Explanation
    When sodium (Na) loses one electron, its atomic number remains the same.

    Here's why:

    * Atomic number is defined as the number of protons in an atom's nucleus.

    * Protons determine the element.

    * Losing an electron only changes the atom's charge, making it a positively charged ion (Na+), but it doesn't change the number of protons.

    So, even though sodium becomes a positively charged ion, it's still sodium because it has 11 protons.
