  • Fluorine's Periodic Table Neighbors: Similar Elements & Properties
    Fluorine (F) is a halogen, and elements in the same group (column) of the periodic table share similar properties.

    Therefore, the elements with properties most similar to fluorine are the other halogens:

    * Chlorine (Cl)

    * Bromine (Br)

    * Iodine (I)

    * Astatine (At)

    These elements all:

    * Have 7 valence electrons

    * Are highly electronegative

    * Form -1 anions readily

    * Are nonmetals

    * Are reactive, especially with metals

    However, there are also some differences due to increasing atomic size and decreasing electronegativity as you move down the group.
